American International School of Costa Rica

The American International School of Costa Rica (AIS) is a private, non-profit association that was founded in 1970. The school serves approximately 220 students from preschool through grade 12 for students of all nationalities. The school year comprises 2 semesters extending from August to December and January to June.

AIS is accredited in the United States by the Southern Association of Colleges and Schools (SACS) and also by the Costa Rica Ministry of Education. This allows students to earn both U.S. high school diploma and the Costa Rican Baccalaureate diploma (MEP). AIS also offers a complete English as a Second Language program (ESL), Spanish as a Second Language program (SSL), and a Learning Support Program (LSP), that support students with additional needs.

AIS provides students with a college preparatory education. AIS offers Honors classes for students in Middle School through High School, Advanced Placement courses for U.S. college credit; curriculum aligned with U.S. and AERO standards, and standardized exams such as the MAP, PSAT, and SAT.

AIS strives to maintain a small, family-orientated environment. Our faculty-to-student ratio is 12 to 1, allowing individual attention. Our school is located on a beautiful campus in Cariari (a suburb of San Jose). Our classroom buildings are built around open courtyards and tropical gardens.
