Restaurant Mr Maiz Much to my sadness, this is my first bad review of a restaurant in Costa Rica. Perhaps not a bad review but a review that is not stellar.

Last week, I went with my wife to this restaurant called Mr. Maiz located in the Mall Dorado in Guadalupe/Moravia Costa Rica.

I have often seen the sign for this restaurant that offers local Costa Rican food and decided that I would try it out and do a review for Mr. Maiz in Costa Rica.

My first impression of Mr. Maiz was good. There was plenty of open air tables and the eating area was clean and orderly.

As my wife and I approached the counter, a young waitress seated us, gave us a pair of menus and took our drink order. The waitress was very courteous, polite and accommodating and with that kind of service, I couldn’t wait to try the food.

Vigaron and gallo pinto de Mr. MaizI chose the vigaron, which is basically, tortilla with fried pork sausage with cabbage cilantro slaw, topped with freshly squeezed lime, while my wife chose to eat a breakfast consisting of gallo pinto scrambled eggs and fried sweet platanos.

My dish came and it looked great. I just couldn’t wait to take my first bite. Unfortunately, the dish tasted like water because it barely had any flavors to it. I had to add a lot of salt and hot sauce to give it any semblance of taste.

My wife thought that the gallo pinto was decent but certainly not worth the price as it is not a very hard Costa Rican Dish to make.

The only good thing from the menu were the batidos or smoothies as those were delicious with just the right amount of milk and sugar.

We will not be going back to Mr Maiz as we were hoping for a tipical Costa Rican restaurant with good food and affordable prices.  Instead, we found food that did not measure up in terms of quality and prices.
